Should Malaysia ban Valentine's Day celebration?

Saudi Arabia has asked florists and gift shops to remove all red items until after Valentine's Day, calling the celebration of such a holiday a sin, local media reported Monday.

"As Muslims we shouldn't celebrate a non-Muslim celebration, especially this one that encourages immoral relations between unmarried men and women, " Sheikh Khaled Al-Dossari, a scholar in Islamic studies, told the Saudi Gazette, an English-language newspaper.

Since Malaysia has a majority muslim population, I'm curious why Valentine's Day is so openly celebrated. Your views please.

Should Malaysia ban Valentine's Day celebration?
Valentine's Day been celebrated for decades locally.

Only recent years, it's been too commercialized.

I don't think Valentine's Day should be banned, just because of it's celebration of love (not necessary for couples but also for family, friends %26amp; etc).

Besides Saudi Arabia %26amp; Malaysia have (mostly) totally different style %26amp; government policies. You don't see Malaysian women covered up %26amp; only hanging out with female.

We're multiracial.

Even if Muslims don't celebrate it. Others non-Muslim do celebrate it as well. The Chinese even have their own "Chinese Valentine's Day, whereby they will throw tangerines into the sea/lake/river/longkang to connect to their other half".

While the "eligible bachelors" will try to fish for the tangerines often with message note of name %26amp; contact %26amp; etc. lah.

Besides most S.Arabians - arrange marriage. While Malaysians it's mostly Sendirian Berhad thing. Oh yeah the rate of divorce is increasing %26amp; the rate of marriage isn't improving. It's well known that many Chinese don't get married nowadays %26amp; thus the decrease of offsprings.

While more %26amp; more Indians are marrying late citing unable to find a compatible partner or work.

So Malaysia shouldn't %26amp; wouldn't be so radical as to ban such a simple loving day.

S.Arabia are Muslim country %26amp; gov. thus it's their right to implement such rules for their country %26amp; one have to respect it due to their beliefs.
Reply:Hahahha.. you forgot, love between siblings, friends, parents and spouse.. well yes, as a Muslim, we shud noe it ourself that valentine is not to be celebrated.. there are other ways you could express your love to ur sibling, friends, parents and spouse.. not only on valentine, we shud show ur love everyday!!! I think that if the Jais/Jawi catch all these ppl doing maksiat, we will see no valentines..
Reply:yeah. likewise malaysia has to start banning celebration of 1st january too. it's western, you know? oh and 31st august, it doesnt exist in the islamic calendar, and it came about as a direct result of western influence. maybe we should just die of loneliness in malaysia. period
Reply:i can give you 1 straight answer. it sure burn the pocket out of a guy!!
Reply:Might as well bans Hari Raya Korban.

As they tortured the animals under the hot sun without any water before slaughtering them .

Take a pick.

Reasonable to bans Valentine day or Korban day ?
Reply:the Banning shall be valid on Muslims only
Reply:Alexandr B. What a load of rubbish.
Reply:It should be banned under Malaysian Syariah law as this is a celebration whch leds to maksiat. However,JAKIM should make sure that their oprations does not invlove non-muslim(leave them to the police since they are not restircted to Malaysian syariah law)as this caused controversy long while ago.Anything which bring us to maksiat should be stayed away and valentine's day is one of them.Valentine's Day is so openly celebrated because tthe law is too loose that the muslims(non-muslims might invlove as well)use such celebration to do maksiat.
Reply:Only the rose seller and cocholate makers get the money.. so ban this pointless celebration before we go pokai..
Reply:St Valentine was a philanthropist he gave all that he had to the needy but today It has been taken out of context. Valentine is not just for lover, but it's a time for the family to love each other. Only Taliban mentality cannot perceived the concept of Valentine
Reply:we should go to school and learn back the history of the v days..
Reply:It is a christian practice started by a catholic priest. My opinion is don't let the establishment or anyone else dictate for you what you want to do. You can be devout and still enjoy the practices of other religions. Christians have learned to be more flexible(I am speaking a general sense). I enjoy some of the jewish and muslim traditions. I also love to join the Greek orthodox when they celebrate easter. The ceremony is ornate and the music lovely. I think this a personal choice and you don't have to be unfaithful in order to do it. I hope that helps.

Attached is an article about it. Remember most of us are free to make personal choices.
Reply:Yes we should because it's not our culture and usually maksiat increases during this celebration.
Reply:It's the same as any other day. What matters is 'will you commit sin ?'.
Reply:Don't think so..

While Malaysia is a muslim country, it has got multi-racial community.

Hence, i still believe Valentine day should be celebrated openly.
Reply:Ban this and that and more of it will come. Love is for any living things and dont hate it by ban one of the day of love!
Reply:It has no religious value at all in the modern time. So no need to ban it. For those who have objections, don't celebrate, people who want to celebrate, let them celebrate.

Live and let live please.
Reply:we all are sinners

i don't care what religion

this valentine day is suck to me.
Reply:yeah you are right
Reply:LOVE DOESN'T EXIST.

HERE IN RUSSIA PEOPLE WHO CELEBRATE VALENTINES DAY ARE IDIOT.

GREETINGS FROM THE COUNTRY THAT WON THE WW2.
