Opening a business?
We started our own timber merchants business two years ago and the planning for it took months, we spoke to the bank at length, and did full plans with reference to other local similar businesses, thier target market and how ours would funtion alongside these. If you are buying a ready established buisness I don't suppose this is as important. The best thing we did was to get a solicitor who dealt with new business and he guided us fully through all the legal requirements we needed, even down to how to hand in our notices with current employers! Good luck!
Reply:Contact local buisness group - they run lectures that you can attaend to gem up on all of these and even better offer money towards start up cost - we used them in our area. One big area that you missed out on is the Disability discrimination act. We do not employ staff as such and encourage them to be self employed - thus cutting paperwork for us and holiday pay etc. Also applies to the area of buisness which we run.

The business has GOT TO BE something you enjoy. You end up putting so many man hours into it that you could end up resenting time spent.

One area which I am looking into is child care - collection and drop off - after school workshops and club - parties and holiday club with ball pit aetc attached . Also including teenage evening so that they have some structure in our area. Could be big money earner - look into it.

Reply:Dont get bogged down with all the various acts, they are there to show fairness, they are not actively enforced and any reasonable person should not worry that they might break any rules coming from them. More importantly you need to concern yourself with funding, cashflow, staff, tax and knowledge of your business.

In answer to your question, health and safety law means carry out due diligence and showing that you have a nominated safety officer (you) have done a safety check and have a first aid box, as well as a h%26amp;s sign.

Sex and race/age discrimination means not discounting someone soley on the basis of their sex and race

Equal pay act means dont have a man and women doing the same job but one earning more than the other (there are exceptions to this)

Trade descriptions act means you must describe the goods you sell as one would reasonably expect, no lying, etc.

Sales of goods act, check the act, certain goods have to have returns guarantees etc.
