I want to open an all in one Bridal Shop, How can I get started?

I would like to open an all in one bridal shop with bridal gowns, prom gowns, tuxedos, bridal accessories, flower arrangements, invitations, entertainment contacts, wedding cakes. I want to have a one stop easy shopping for the bride to be in one place that they can depend on with everything and anything that the bride will need for her special day. I am considering on having an on site bakery, on site florist, and an on site taylor/seamstress. I know there is no other like it anywhere in close proximity to my area. So if anyone can direct me to the right direction I will greatly appreciate it.

I want to open an all in one Bridal Shop, How can I get started?
There is one near where I live. Here is their site. They do more consignment dresses but that would be an easy switch to new and including the prom dresses as well. DON"T forget mother of the bride dresses - so hard to find nice, non-frumpy grandmother dresses!! Good luck!
Reply:I have to agree with one of the other. You need to start small. The gown shop and tux rental would be good start. This is not uncommon to see them together.

The other companies could be hooked up to your company. These company share the same building. That way you would not have to worry about if you company goes under the rest will not be hurt.
Reply:First thing, you are going to need a Business Plan and financing from a Bank. You need to do your homework, figure out how much you are likely to get in a business loan and start putting paperwork together showing that you've researched.

I would not recommend an onsite bakery UNLESS you are an experienced baker. Having that would open up a whole other area of workplace and food safety regulations that you would have to meet.

To be honest, it would be best to start small. You are more likely to get financial backing (which you will definitely need) if you have a more modest goal at start. It's fine to plan for the future, but starting too big is one of the big reasons new businesses fail. Learn one area (i.e., dress shop) and build an excellent business reputation in that before you try to diversify.

If you don't have a business background or experience operating a company, I suggest you take some business classes. Owning and operating a business involves a lot more than you might think - hiring/firing/training staff, site mantenance, accouting rules and regulations, workplace safety, inventory management - just to name some of the basics.

Good luck! Opening a business is hard work and you have to be dedicated. You won't see a profit immediately, especially for the grand plans you have outlined. It's going to take a lot of dedication (and an outside source of income) to make your dream a reality.

Why is costco, trader joe's,1-800 flowers, and large corporations trying to overshadow flower shops?

I don't understand why large corporations take advantage of small businesses, all those online "florists" like pro-flowers, blooms.net and 1-800 flowers, rip people off.

I ordered a large arrangement from 1-800 flowers and I didn't get the best quality in flowers, I would rather order from a local flower shop now, especiall y those that are family owned.

they give you the best service and products it was worthe the money, pricey, but worth every penny. I still don't understand why some people are still dumb enough to support those large corporations that have no knowledge or passion like a REAL flower shop does. Is it because small flower shops don't have enough money to advertise like large corporations do?

Why is costco, trader joe's,1-800 flowers, and large corporations trying to overshadow flower shops?
It's called capitalism. Get used to it because it's not going anywhere any time soon.

The sims open for business?

I got the expansion pack Open for Business for Christmas. I installed it and I want to open a hair salon, florist shop etc. How do I go about doing that?

The sims open for business?
It depends on whether you want a home business or a community business.

If you want a home business, use the phone to register your business. Then buy then necessary supplies (salon chair, etc) and an open and closed sign (in the decorations menu.)

If you want a community business, use the phone to purchase real estate and then travel to your business to set things up.

What's the best flower directory for finding a florist? I have mothers & inlaws & grandmas all across the us.

I have a mother in Florida, mother-inlaw in Texas, grandmother in Minnesota, and another in California. I am a strong believer in the shop getting all the profit. I will not use Tele-Floral, 1-800 Flowers, or FTD cause they "give the shop" a web site only so they can take a percentage of the profit. That is so wrong with the economy the way it is all these florists deserve the full profit!! They are the ones doing the work. Anyone know of a site that just gives me the florist so I can call them directly and get that person to person service I feel I deserve?

What's the best flower directory for finding a florist? I have mothers %26amp; inlaws %26amp; grandmas all across the us.
Hello, I completely understand, I have family everywhere also. I found this great site last year that has florist listings all across the U.S.. The site is floralyellowpages.com. They do list web sites of the florists also, so if you don't want to give that chunk to 1-800 flowers, ftd, or tele you may just want to call them direct. Hope this helps you out. I know they were the most convenient site i have found, and I use them every year for Mothers Day, Christmas, and everything in-between.
Reply:try 1-800-flowers. They mail the flowers to the door. Or teleflora.com and ftd.com. These sites have an agreement with local florists and will look for the closest partner to the recipient to do the arrangement and delivery.

How can I get more business out of my website? We are a real flower shop in suburban Chicago. Need help.?

We are a real brick and mortar store. Most internet florist are nothing more than order takers. They take 30% off the total and call the order to a brick and mortar shop. This is not fair to customers and real florist. We have enough competion with grocery and big box stores. How can a small floral shop get big response to our website? I would gladly pay to see big results! I would bet that more than 75% of the advertised florist on the web have nothing more than a computor and phone to run there business. 1-800-flower is the worst of all. They take over 32% for the money that is spent on your order.

How can I get more business out of my website? We are a real flower shop in suburban Chicago. Need help.?
First, don't knock the competition. They do what they do, you do what you do and your goal is to focus on how you do it better.

Small florist huh? What is your specialty. Do you or your staff hand pick the arrangements that you send? Do you have a picture of your store and/or staff on your website?

How about special occasions the other 'big box' stores don't cover? Forget the same old 'Merry Christmas' and 'Happy New Year' sales gimmick. Take a page from Hallmark's play book - they have 'Stick To Your Diet' cards with the theme song from Rocky. How about brides over 20 arrangements, 2nd Wives Club for men that charges a low annual membership, 2nd Husband Club for women (same concept) and yes, women do send flowers to men.

A historical arrangement just for those who relocated to/or from Illinois? What you want to think about is people move around, a lot! A special floral arrangement 'from home' may make being away easier for some of them. And a 'Welcome Home' arrangement for new arrivals makes the move less stressful. Family and friends will send them instead of a card.

Also, don't start lowering your prices if you decide to do any of these 'special arrangements'. Go for premium pricing. Why the competition is fighting tooth and claw is that they 'low ball' hoping to make it up in volume.

You're in a highly unique position to make up your own rules. Charge premium prices for a 'price has nothing to do with it, it's different' crowd.

Hope this got your creative brain going;)

I need an independent florist!!!?

I am getting married 11/9/07 in Farmers Branch, tx and still need a florist I am looking for someone in the Dalls/Ft Worth area. I am looking for a florist that is independent and runs it from home or does it on the side and is really good b/c I am on a strict budget. I have heard if you go with someone like that it cuts your cost alot, instead of going with a flower shop b/c they are kinda pricey. I don't know if anyone else is planninig a wedding on a budget but it is hard and frustrating. So if someone knows of one or is a friend of one and they have a website please please let me know.

I need an independent florist!!!?
I have a couple of names, but we are in South Tx, and they would have to be shipped to you. If you e-mail me, I can get you their names and numbers. Best wishes!
Reply:Would be best perhaps to look up Market Gardens,Nurseries or something similiar.
Reply:Post this ad on the DFW craigslist board and you will get much more attention and answers from actual area florists.

Just let them know what you had in mind and see what they offer as a price. Negotiate from there. Don't put the price you are willing to pay in the ad or that is exactly where they will start from. They will see it and say "well I would have done it for $500 but since she's willing to pay $1,000...."

What would you do if an employer took advantage of you?

I have worked for several florists and have a associates degree in floriculture. When I came to town, I got a job as a florist. I was new %26amp; they wouldn't listen to any of my background training, opting to use the advice of girls that "learned on the job".

I was given a chance to move to another shop in town. The entire group of girls quit that florist and moved along with me. The nice thing, was that here, I was given more respect %26amp; was often the first consulted on problems. I was the wedding %26amp; funeral specialist %26amp; the only one that could tie a pretty bow (not trying to brag...just being realistic).

Well, I had problems with one of the women who I have found out was a back stabber, %26amp; I let the employer know that i was going to quit if it didn't stop. She gave everyone all of the ____ work to do %26amp; sat around talking on the phone. Come to find out, she was a long time friend of the employer. I quit. Now they are talking badly about me. How can I save my reputation?

What would you do if an employer took advantage of you?
Sounds like you did the best thing by leaving. You don't say how you know that they are talking bad about you. If they are just bad mouthing you in the shop to each other and someone is reporting this to you, then tell the "reporter" that it is silly for you to care about what they say now that you are gone and you'd prefer not to hear this gossip. Move on and start fresh some other place. If they are giving you bad references which are preventing you from getting employment elsewhere, then you might have cause to talk to a lawyer, depending on if you have proof and what the laws are in your state. My best advice to you is to let go of the past and move forward.

What is the minimum wage for a trainee of 28?

I started working at a florist a month ago,one day a week voluntary to gain experience for when I start my college course. To cut a long story short she asked me to work 2 days a week and told me she would pay me for it,I asumed it would be minimum wage as I am 28.I gave her my hours for the month and said,im guessing I will be paid minimum wage and she said 'no trainee wage'. We had a fall out the next day about something else and she told me not to come back.

I have to go to the shop and pick up my cheque tomorrow but I think she is trying to get out paying me all together as she has kept quiet about it.I still didnt get round to sorting out my P45 ,what rights do I legally have in getting paid,i have worked for one month.

Thank you very much for any info

What is the minimum wage for a trainee of 28?
she isnt allowed to pay you less than the minium wage whether you are a trainee or not.

trainee wages stop at the age of 25.
Reply:The government implements a minimum wage to stop people from being exploited. Shes out of line! it is illegal not to pay you this. Contact the citzens advice buearu and see if they can help.
Reply:Depend what state you're in. Illinois minimum wage is 6.50/hr. She has to pay you minimum wage. Hopefully you have paperwork proving that you worked there. Look into small claims court if you do not get paid.
Reply:£5.25 per hour
Reply:There are trainee wages that may apply, but employers are not allowed to hire for free. You are entitled to get paid unless you are getting college credit or it is a non-profit organization. Trainee wages are also limited depending on age and industry, I don't think you can be considered a trainee at 28. You should look to your State's Department of Labor to file a claim.
Reply:If she doesn't pay you at least minimum, the take her to small claims court for the difference. I'm also betting that trainee wage was higher.

What country is this, and what the heck is trainee wage?
Reply:$5.15 and that is it.
Reply:She must in law, pay you the statutory minimum wage for each hour you work. That is the minimum wage of an adult, regardless that you are a trainee, I believe that is now £5,75 per hour.

How much should i charge for these photos?

Hi,

I'm taking photos of flower arrangements for a local florist and i was wondering how much i should charge them for it.

I have an 8mp D-SLR and some lighting which i take into their shop, I'll also be getting a softbox within the next 2 weeks.

The florist wants to make a catalog (i believe just a printed photo album) of their arrangements so that customers can come in and choose a style or arrangements that they like etc.

I have a few photos from my first shoot on the link below.

http://myonlinefiles.net/users/portfolio...

I'll be adding a few more photos to this gallery as i get some more work from them (tomorrow and next sat).

They would be getting the photos on CD.

I'm thinking of charging per photo outcome. i.e. I take as many as i think i need, then choose the best 1-2 of each arrangement and photoshop them (background, colours etc.).

What do you guys think?

How much should i charge for these photos?
I would definately think about how much time each good shot really takes, or should take. Honestly you should come up with a reasonable hourly rate for what they want, estimate how long you should take for all of it, and call that a flat fee.

example: you take 200 shots over 5 hours (this is hypothetical), but you wind up only using 20 of them. You spend 2 hours in photoshop. Setting up and tearing down would take an hour. So if you round up for the 20 pics to an hour you are at 4 hours, even though you spent 6 there and 2 in post porduction. Consider the rest as learning time.

4 hours time $30 would be $120

times $60 would be $240 and so on.

If however you dont have many you dont use you would charge more.

Why do so many people use wire services when ordering flowers?

This is Randall head designer with The Flower Shop located in Charlottesville, VA. A full service florist theflowershopvirginia.com why are people using wire services when ordering flowers for delivery?

Why do so many people use wire services when ordering flowers?
The nearest florist to me is 27 miles away (45 minute drive, $7 for gas), open 6 days a week from 8 AM to 7 PM. My phone and computer are mere inches away and open 24/7. My aunt has flower allergy problems and can't get near flowers, but she faithfully wired bouquets to grandmama for every major holiday.

Then...there are the "floral challenged," who have no sense of taste, style, or anything...the kind of person who wouldn't know the difference between a burger at McDpnalds vs. a burger at TGIF's.

Examples of arrangements may not always be available at a florists, but a pretty picture is always available online.
Reply:Flowers by wire may be a mysterious term to some, but it's the most popular way to send flowers across the country or around the world, with same day delivery possible to more than 90% of people living and working in the United States and Canada, as well as service to more than 100 other countries. The name "flowers by wire" is admittedly old-fashioned. Still, the quality and convenience are cutting edge. Interestingly enough, like most great ideas, it all started in a very low-tech, high-touch way.

Flowers by wire delivery dates back more than a century. When someone wanted to send flowers to a loved one in another city, a hometown flower shop would help by contacting a trusted florist in the distant town. Many flower shops were handed down from generation to generation, and florist families had a natural network of hardworking associates they'd come to know through the years. The distant florist could deliver the flowers to the recipient quite easily. Unfortunately, this network of fellow florists was informal, and communication was cumbersome. In many cases, mail or telegraph messages had to be used to relay an order from one florist to another. Fortunately, communications improved, and florists strengthened their associations through industry groups and trade associations. Thanks to these groups, what began as an informal cooperative effort among a handful of local florists quickly became highly organized networks of many thousands of flower shops worldwide.

One such organization was Florists Telegraph Delivery, founded by fifteen forward-thinking florists in 1910. The organization grew rapidly, but its name, and the telegraph, soon became obsolete. As technology evolved, florists migrated to the telephone as a much more efficient way of exchanging orders. The association was renamed FTD, and several other flowers by wire groups took shape. Today, the best known are FTD, Teleflora, and Interflora. Each includes more than 10,000 florist members, who meet strict quality standards and adhere to professional guidelines. It's these florists that make flowers by wire possible.

Of course, flowers by wire technology has continued to improve, too. Today, the vast majority of flowers by wire orders are transferred between florists on proprietary data networks to ensure the speed, accuracy, and security of transmission. Ties among the larger and better florists have only strengthened, because they regularly fill floral orders for each other, monitor results, and maintain close professional relationships. So, the fundamental concept remains -- fresh flower arrangements individually designed and locally delivered by independent florists all working together to help their customers.

No wonder flowers continue to be one of the most convenient gift options available. Whether you're sending flowers around the world or around the block, a professional florist can handle everything. And, you can easily shop for flowers online. So, next time you want to say "thanks," "happy birthday," "get well soon," or "thinking of you," just visit your favorite flower shop. No matter what the occasion or delivery destination, a quality florist can help. Most guarantee your satisfaction. And, while they may not have a clue how to use a telegraph, they can easily send flowers by wire almost anywhere just for you.

Isn't the price of gas hurting all small business?

I own a florist shop and the price of gas is hurting my business and every other business in the plaza.

www.donotbuygas.com is a website that I found to lobby the senate to bring down the price of gas.

What can we do?

It is a desperate situation when the economy can only get worse.

Isn't the price of gas hurting all small business?
I do not know of a single business sector that is not impacted by rising gas prices. Look at what's going on with the airlines. 2 have gone bankrupt. The price of food is going up too. I don't know what we can do except get very efficient with our gas usage and wherever we can, diversify to increase our income. I would think there are some areas you as a florist could naturally branch out in; balloons, gifts, possibly something online.

I am working for a company that does hospice. I saw on the internet an article about nurses quitting home visiting jobs because of the high price of gas. It hurts our business too.

Best of luck to you.
Reply:Gas is the least of the problems. Its the greedy market thats all and regulations are terrible. If wages would someday go up to what they should be, no one would be complaining about it. This isn't the first time gas reached a high level, but at that time we could afford it.

How does it make you feel when you read something like this?

Each year he sent her roses, and the note would always say,

I love you even more this year, than last year on this day.

My love for you will always grow, with every passing year."

She knew this was the last time that the roses would appear.

She thought, he ordered roses in advance before this day.

Her loving husband did not know, that he would pass away.

He always liked to do things early, way before the time.

Then, if he got too busy, everything would work out fine.

She trimmed the stems and placed them in a very special vase.

Then, sat the vase beside the portrait of his smiling face.

She would sit for hours, In her husband's favorite chair.

While staring at his picture, and the roses sitting there.

A year went by, and it was to live without her mate.

With loneliness and solitude, that had become her fate.

Then, the very hour,

The doorbell rang, and there were roses sitting by her door.

She brought the roses in, and then just looked at them in shock.

Then, went to get the telephone, to call the florist shop.

The owner answered, and she asked him, if he would explain,

Why would someone do this to her, causing her such pain?

"I know your husband passed away, more than a year ago,"

The owner said, "I knew you'd call, and you would want to know.

The flowers you received today, were paid for in advance.

Your husband always planned ahead, he left nothing to chance.

There is a standing order, that I have on file down here,

And he has paid, well in advance, you'll get them every year.

There also is another thing, that I think you should know,

He wrote a special little card...he did this years ago.

Then, should ever I find out that he's no longer here, that's the card that should be sent to you the following year."

She thanked him and hung up the phone, her tears now flowing hard. Her

fingers shaking, as she slowly reached to get the card.

Inside the card, she saw that he had written her a note.

Then, as she stared in total silence,

this is what he wrote...

"Hello my love, I know it's been a year since I've been gone.

I hope it hasn't been too hard for you to overcome.

I know it must be lonely, and the pain is very real.

Or if it was the other way, I know how I would feel.

The love we shared made everything so beautiful in life.

I loved you more than words can say, you were the perfect wife.

You were my friend and lover, you fulfilled my every need.

I know it's only been a year, but please try not to grieve.

I want you to be happy, even when you shed your tears.

That is why the roses will be sent to you for years.

When you get these roses, think of all the happiness that we had together,

and how both of us were blessed.

I have always loved you and I know I always will.

But, my love, you must go on, you have some living still.

Please...try to find happiness, while living out your days.

I know it is not easy, but I hope you find some ways.

The roses will come every year, and they will only stop,

When your door's not answered, when the florist stops to knock.

He will come five times that day, in case you have gone out.

But after his last visit, he will know without a doubt!

To take the roses to the place, where I've instructed him

and place the roses where we are, together once again.

Sometimes in life, you find a special friend; Someone who changes your

life just by being part of it.

Ive ask that question because I am a florist and this shop has experience growth this past year.

We want to stand out in the floral industry. We offer already other free services that other shops dont offer. Such as pictures of their arrangement or gifts sent to their emails , so they can enjoy the gifts as well. This has really made a difference with our customers. Some of our customers have said they stop ordering online because they were recieving products that just wasnt what they ordered.

What grabs your attention when ordering flowers, color, design, what?
My main thing when ordering flowers is the color selection. I like deep, rich colors like pumpkin orange, chocolate brown, blood red, etc. Like fall colors, mostly.
Reply:i look for something more interesting than just flowers. a decorative vase that can be used again. maybe river rocks and twigs that can be saved after the flowers die. beautiful ribbons and bows. oh--and i hate those generic business card size greetings that come on the arangement. people will spend $50 for a nice arangement, and then they cheap out on the card! i wish there were classier choices in this area.

i really enjoy progressive, trendy looks, almost a japanese style, a feeling or emotion should be conveyed through flower arangements.

I need a name for a floral shop..have any ideas..let me know?
You could play on the word "florist" and the way it rhymes with "Forest"...eg...(yes I know these are crap but you get the idea)

Nottingham Florist

The Black Florist

Florist Fire

etc....or play with the word "Bloom" as mentioned before...

Bloomers

Blooming Lovely

Bloomtown

etc :o)
Reply:I was going to ask you your age before I mentioned this name but folks in town here want me to start a garden club and I am going to name it "Baby Bloomers". But I fit the case age-wise and you really don't. Dad might. Anyway could be a cute name with a pair of flowered bloomers as a logo.
Reply:Floppsy Moppsy Floral! Go with the Beatrix Potter them, kind of cute and nostalgic, like a little lady rabbit dressed in old fashioned clothes carrying a bouqet of flowers! You asked!
Reply:"Blue Rooster".... : ) why you ask... because it just sounds cute and you can make a trademark for yourself with a cutsie name.

Did you have a nickname growing up ? A personal family joke ? A funny pet's name or aunt's name that brings back wonderful memories... What is the answer to this Jumble Puzzle (it's in today's paper)?

The question is:

Shared by a flower stem and a florist shop.

The letters are:

_ _ _ _ _ OF

I have tried all morning and come up with nothing! It's driving me crazy.

Now it's driving me crazy too. Can't you cheat and peek at the answer? Means of support! Eureka.

Has anyone done their own wedding flowers?

I'm getting married May 12th which is mothers day. I just realized flowers are going to cost about twice as much as normal because of the weekend, I was estimated about 1-thousand dollars for 7 bouquets.

I worked in a florist shop for a few years so I know a bit about bouqueting, and it seems to me it would be way cheaper to just buy a bunch of flowers and do it myself (with the help of my bm's). I would still pay someone to do the boutineers. Just wondering if you think it's plausible or if I'm out of my mind!

Has anyone done their own wedding flowers?
I absolutely think you can do it yourself and save yourself alot of money. You can go with silk or real flowerrs. If you go with real, I would suggest going through a wholesaler like Costco or Sam's Club. I bought my flowers through them and paid $12.99 per 2 dozen roses. The service was great and the flowers were gorgeous. I picked them up 3 days before the wedding and ordered them medium tight. I had plenty of time to arrange all the centerpieces and bought vases at Michaels for $3 each. For the church, I used pew cones from www.pewcones.com and filled them with the flowers. If you worked at a florist, you will have no trouble at all arranging the flowers. When I asked a florist how much she would charged for a similar centerpiece, she said $75 each and I spent under $20 each. The knot.com also has some great pictures and ideas. Hope this helps!
Reply:Do not buy into that florist crap. They charge an arm and a leg. Go through a bulk floral company - or get them from samsclub.com or costco.com. $1000 for 7 bouquets? Please! On growersbox.com you can get 6 1-dozen rose bouquets for $108. and they are fresh and beautiful. Don't do the silk flowers when you can get fresh ones at a much better price!
Reply:actually mothers day is may 13th, the 12th is a saturday.

I honestly think if its something you know you can pull off to look both beautifully and professionaly done, then go for it. It saves quite a bit of money in the long run. if you know everything you need great if not i could fire up my memory and let you know what you need, i used to make wedding bouquets.

For my aunts wedding which was put together in i think it was 4 months, i did the flowers ( 3 boutineers, and 7 bouquets, all table centerpieces {which were bouquets} all the flowers on the main table and the background of the main table) it took me 3 days non stop (by myself too) and costed in total, roughly 200.00 (because we used alot of roses). plus i cant remember the little extras. I also made the cake which was a hassel in itself lol. But everthing turned out amazing. Basically have fun with it and its your decision but i dont think its tacky at all.
Reply:I did my own bouquets with fake flowers. Everyone loved them!

I was lucky cuz I just got married Jan 13, and I didnt see many flowers in a winter wedding so it made it easy for me.

Good luck!!!!!!
Reply:I did bouquets of fake flowers. It was a lot cheaper than having some one else do real ones. I just bought them at the craft store. They were set up to lay in the crook of the arm. For the bouquet to be tossed, I found one already made up and then took off the plastic rings that held all the flowers together and added my own touch to it and wrapped it in ribbon. It all actually turned out really nice. It's a great budget saver.
Reply:I am doing flowers for a June wedding and the bride has 7 bridesmaids. I am using silk flowers from Hobby Lobby and we purchased the flowers this week while they were 50% off for single stems. Total cost for 7 beautiful silk bouquets...$78.00.
Reply:If you have worked in a florist shop then you most likely have a pretty good grasp on how to do it. The quote you got was outlandish.

By all means, do it yourself.

Time was an issue for me in my wedding so we created silk bouquets.
Reply:yea..go for it..use artificial flowers and get those little handle things that go underneath the flowers..they look like a handle and then it's circular at the top of it and is kind of slanted...then buy aqua foam to put in the circular part...then cut the flowers and make a nice little arangement..its easy...
Reply:If you were going with silk I would think you could pull it off without a hitch. But trying to do it close to your wedding.....don't you have enough to do to get ready for that wonderful day?

I'd think long %26amp; hard about this one.
Reply:My mother used silk flowers for her wedding....they were very inexpensive and looked amazing! The great thing is, they last forever, unlike real flowers that you would have to have freeze dried (which end up slightly discolored and brittle sometimes).

However, if you go with real flowers, especially with your background, I would check out some local shops to see if they have any "second quality" flowers you can buy in bulk. They're MUCH cheaper, and the only thing wrong with them is a couple of discolored petals or bent leaves (which are, of course, easily removed).

I'm sure whatever you choose, they will be great - but I always think that everyone is so busy looking at how beautful the bride is, they won't notice if the flowers don't look "Martha Stewart" perfect! Enjoy your day!
Reply:I had fake flowers.
Reply:Flowers might not seem it, but they're a big responsibility, is that really something you want to take on? You know your stuff, but maybe you could teach someone else and have them in charge of it? You're going to be way stressed on your wedding day, and flowers are the last thing you need to be doing that morning/afternoon.
Reply:I used silk flowers and made them myself nothing to it and everyone thought they were beautiful! Doesn't take all that much time and since you used to work in a shop it should come easy for you! I bought the bouts also! So go for it!
Reply:go to hobby lobby look at their flowers the fake ones look so real and also they won't leak from the stems and get on your dress
Reply:Try this site: http://www.proflowers.com
Reply:i am getting married in june and my fiacne's mom and me are making my flowers , all of them and we shopped aroung a flea markets and stores like micheals and found cheap prices, if you know how to do them yourself you can buy bulk flowers and make your own bouquets. give it a try i aonly soent about 300 dollars for all of my flowers
Reply:I did my own floral arrangements for the reception centerpieces and I had a florist do a very "base model" bouquet for myself %26amp; maids and "added" some ivy and other flowers that were cheaper for me to buy and stick in.

I think with your experience it is plausible, just make sure you have a plan B if it doesn't turn out as you hope.
Reply:I ASKED WHAT A CUBAN SANWICH WAS, WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME DUMB INGREDIENTS ON A REUBEN.....CUBAN....NOT REUBEN
Reply:I got married in Sept and me and one of my bridesmaids did them all! Just buy them in advance and work on them slowly if you have to.
Reply:I was apart of a couple of weddings where the bride did her own flowers. You of all people should be able to put something lovely and professional looking together because of your background.

Both weddings I was apart of had simple bouquets, however. One was callalillies and the other was just parchment paper roses.

They both used the pins that have the fake pearls on the end to hold in place, and OH!!! I just remembered, the rose bouquets were held together by clear hair rubber bands that you can get at the drugstore, with ribbon wrapped around the band so you couldn't see.

Both bouquets were really nice.

Wedding flowers?

I'm getting married in late October and I'm trying to decide what type of flowers I want. My colors are black and hot pink and white. Can you get any type of flower from a florist in fall or does it have to be in season? I was hoping for tulips.

Also, any ideas on any hot pink flowers that would look good in wedding bouquets?

Is the McCartney rose easy to get a hold of? Ever seen it in a florist shop?

Wedding flowers?
For a fall wedding tulips will not be available, or if they were they would be VERY expensive.

One of the greatest hot pink flowers is a stargazers lily. There are a lot of hot pink roses, the McCartney is a garden rose and hasn't been done as a florist rose.

White calla lilies are great.

Good luck!
Reply:I would talk to your florist she should be able to get you any flower you want. You could also use silk in your bridesmaids, and grooms men, and family members. and use fresh in your arrangement. Some good silks look as good as fresh. Your florist may even be able to help you there. Or check out books at the library for ideas, and hit up Hobby Lobby, Michael's or any stores like that, they usually have people that make up arrangements, and they could help you also. Never heard of a McCartney rose. Congrats by the way!
Reply:If you want tulips then you should get them I dont think you should have a problem getting them. I also recoment roses. They have different colors. congratualtions!
Reply:You can *usually* get any type of flower from an upper end florist. You will pay a premium for the tulips in fall though. They will have to import them. For a specific variety of rose I would think you would need to go to a high end florists who deals with specialty flowers. When I asked my florist for a specific rose variety they gave me the run around. They ended up dying white roses to the shade I wanted from the sterling rose and all was well!
Reply:pink lillies? or Gerberas? they7 both good!

Help! What can I sell in my shop?

Hi everyone. I have a shop in an affluent town in southern england which will stand empty for the the next 12 months. It has approx 35 square metres and is on a high street. Can anyone think of a product area which are emerging as the next big thing. It needs to be:

- fairly quick to mobilise

- have a start up cost of less than £20k.

- need no speciast knowledge

The shop is next to a florist and interior design company.

2. Handmade crafts (find some neat things that no one else has)

3. Some cool vases or things similar

4. Some neat things for gardens like decor, etc.

Whatever you decide..GOOD LUCK ;-)
Reply:Hi, I am a retired small shop-keeper. Without hesitation I would go for greeting cards, the profit margin is high, you need no special knowledge, there are no 'sell-by' dates to worry about, can be set up immediately and will compliment the florist. Watch for shoplifters and good trading.
Reply:Well as it is comming up to xmas time i would sell all types of teddy bears gift wrapped in cellophane tied with ribbons etc and personalised ie merry christmas mum orrrr with havin the flower shop next door would be good as flowers take off at xmas, good luck whatever you choose to do witch1
Reply:something craft based - scrapbooking and cardmaking are very popular - would be attracted by florists and interior design being near - make sure the stock that you buy in is acid and lignin free - can't go too far wrong after that

good luck - post your decision on here so we get to know

Reply:I think candles would be a mover, especially next door to a florist and an Interior design shop. Candles are used for Interior design and in floral arrangements, you have two customers there already! Plus, candles are always needed for romantic nights and powercuts.

Where can I find or order Blue Roses in the NE United States?
Any florist can order them for you from their suppliers. If you're stuck, call 1-800-FLOWERS. But I would go to a nice neighborhood florist where they special order often for things like weddings.

I display goods on pavement outside my shop council says no. other local businesses threatened too. Help?

Council is quoting Disabilities discrimination act 1995 and Highways act 1980 but pavements are not blocked as they are wider than average. YOu can definitely get wheelchairs/double buggies passed. I have a furniture shop, there is a florist, a fruit %26amp; veg shop, 2 lovely cafes. In all twenty small independant shops. A vibrant shopping area Please help

I display goods on pavement outside my shop council says no. other local businesses threatened too. Help?
Nevertheless the pavement is not your property and you have no rights to display your goods there. The same applies to the other shops in your parade. Some shops in some areas do have private forecourts where they can display their wares, but these are usually clearly marked, and the council is not responsible for the upkeep or maintenance of private fronts. It is not only wheelchairs and buggies that are affected but also blind and poorly sighted people who could stumble over goods on the pavement. You are expected to trade from the interior of your premises. The council is absolutely correct.
Reply:Measure the sidewalk space- with and without vendor stuff.

The typical ADA sidewalk would be 6'6" (78") wide at a minimum to allow a small amount of 2-way traffic when a wheelchair is involved, and 10' is recommended where there is a likelihood of congestion or other conditions occur. There are a THOUSAND other issues involved in proper sidewalk planning as well.

The issue is not 'can get past', but 'can get past safely for the chair user, other people, and other stuff in the area. Many wheelchairs are not real manueverable.

I'd bet the sidewalks passed inspection WITHOUT the booths, etc., but will fail with them- you don't usually build super wide sidewalks without a good reason because of the cost.
Reply:Sorry the council is right.

Usually they don't care as long as everyone uses common sense regarding access, but some new jobsworth is probably trying to make his mark,

OR

possibly a council somewhere in the country has had a claim against them from one of the ambulance chasing lawyers and an "obstruction of the pavement" precedent has now been set which will result in 100's of spurious claims.

These type of low life Lawyers know there is big insurance company behind the council who will pay up rather than take it to court.

Technically the pavement is public property and you cannot put your wares or signs on it. The fact that people may have plenty of room does not matter.
Reply:Good, the pavements are for pedestrians not to expand your shop floor space, when you are in a wheelchair and you have to guide around all these obstacles then perhaps your attitude would change.

How do I send flowers to Osmond funeral?

Hi. I'd like to send a bouquet of flowers to the George Osmond funeral. I know it's to be held in one of the LDS churches. But I do not have the address or phone number. Would the local florist shop in Provo know where to direct it? Any advise? I've never sent flowers before.

How do I send flowers to Osmond funeral?
Oakhills LDS Stake Center,

925 E. North Temple Drive, Provo.

A viewing will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at the East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery in Provo.
Reply:The Osmond family asked that instead of sending flowers, people should make a donation to Children's Hospital Network. Report It

Reply:call the local florest, 99% of the time they know the funeral homes address. What you will need is, an amount you want to spend, a credit card, and a type of flower arrangement you would like ( they will recommend if you dont know) and what you would like to say on the card. They will take care of the rest.................

A feminist spit in my eye after I picked up some flowers she dropped on the ground. What should I do?

I was just being nice! I'm holding the door open for her at the florist shop and she dropped her flowers which fell right at my feet, so I picked them up and handed them to her. Talk about rude, afterwards, she spit in my eye!

A feminist spit in my eye after I picked up some flowers she dropped on the ground. What should I do?
Assuming this is true, I would have called 911 and pressed charges, and I would have forced her to stay put (under the protection of a citizen's arrest) until the police got there.

Spitting is assult. I'd press to the full extent of the law. Assuming what you wrote is true.
Reply:whoa!! That is so mean. I love men too much to be like that to them. Even if one is a feminist they should respect the opposite sex. That is rediculous. Especially when you are respecting them! She is stupid.
Reply:Now, is that really true?
Reply:kick her in the balls.
Reply:Press charges. Spitting on someone is assault.
Reply:well one watch your eye out asap and your face spit carries a lot of germs, second consider the source she is a feminist so you say what a contridicate in terms one who believes we should be equal in pay and leagal things at work such as man but still expects to be treated as a women . they are to extreme. yes we should have fair teatment and equal pay in the workplace as men but be proud you are a women and carry your self as one not some women who thinks she should be a man. i say give her back her flowers and even say have a good day and God loves her . the kinder you are to people who attack the more confused and cowardly they get
Reply:Forget about it, some people just have no manners, I would not label her a feminist though. As I am sure a lot of feminist are polite, doing an act of kindness is it's own reward, even if the person you do it for behaves like an animal. Don't stop being kind because some person is a jerk, be they male or female.
Reply:She was extremely rude. I would not do anything. What is there to do? Tell her off? I guess you could, but I do not think I would be bothered as she probably would not get it.

Just remember that not all women think that way.
Reply:I think she must have been a bit insane to do such a thing. But don't let it discourage you from being nice and chivalrous. Most women (me included) greatly appreciate it.
Reply:She wasn't a feminist...She was just insane! Learn to recognize the difference!
Reply:Kick her in the teeth - then press charges against her for assault with a deadly weapon.

Now you have to go to the hospital and get tested for AIDS and other diseases.
Reply:First, the answer to your question is WALK AWAY.

I'm assuming either this really happened or you are mad at a self proclaimed feminist today.

A feminist is someone who believes in the equality and full humanity of both women and men.

Other than that core belief, they are as varied as anyone else. Some have bad days and are really rude at times. This has nothing whatsover with their feminist beliefs.

If you are having a bad day and snap at someone or cut them off or whatever, what would that have to do with your political beliefs?

Etiquette has very little to do with politics. There is no excuse for bad manners.

I hold the door open for people who are right behind me or who appear to need help, regardless of who they are. Polite is polite. I am often mistreated by certain groups of people where I live. For example, I will hold the door open for a group of people entering behind me, and they will laugh and make comments about me or my demographic (different from theirs). At other times, others of their demographic will slam the door in my face, again making rude remarks about me and the differences between us. Now, unless you can say most of the feminists you've encounted are like this, you aren't even pointing out a trend in your area. You are just describing a negative encounter between two human beings.

Just like I don't feel all members of this particular group that I refered to are always rude everywhere, I don't feel that feminists as a group are always rude or against men being polite. I think someone (you or her) was just having a bad day or were/are being rude.
Reply:Your...rich....aren't you.

What is the name of a romantic movie with a scene full of platinum roses?

I don't remember anything about this movie except that the girl liked platinum roses and the guy got her a bunch. He might have owned the florist shop. My sister really likes this movie and we've been rewatching countless movies in the past few years looking for it. It probably came out in the late 90's.

I want to start a hobby, like gardening, but I live in an apartment?

I'd also like to get a job doing something with plants or animals, but I don't have any experience so far other than food service and retail. Could I work retail in a florist's shop? Have any of you done this with no experience and have been hired?

I want to start a hobby, like gardening, but I live in an apartment?
Everyone has to start somewhere. Go and apply in places that you would like to work. I had no experience besides liking plants and knowing a lot of basics about plants when I got hired in the late 80's. I work in a nursery. You spend a lot of time outside and lots of cleaning and raking and moving. You learn as you go. I kept a little pad in my pocket and wrote down things I wanted to look up when I got home. Loading peoples plants and unloading truckloads of plants and putting them away and getting information out there for poeple who read. I know sometimes the vets hire poeple with no training if they seem to have a good aptitude for caring for animals. If you have retail experience, what about a nice pet store? Good luck at finding something you like doing.

I almost forgot the other part of your question. If you have a deck you can grow things in pots. Or get a few houseplants and play with those.
Reply:Skip the florist. Go to a Landscape shop or Plant Nursery. There are books on apartment gardens. Also, you may have to look hard for this one, but there are people that have land that they rent out by the season to apt. dwellers and seniors that like to garden but don't have land. Don't know what they're called or how you find them, but I know they exist.
Reply:container gardning is the way to go get some pots and plant seeds in them
Reply:Start off at a local florist.

Buy and plant some indoor plants, seeds...You know.

Then use the money you earn and move to your own little place.
Reply:If you live in a cool neighborhood there might be community gardens...where you rent or even are given a small plot of property that is part of a bigger garden for you to do all your planting...

If there isn't one in your neighborhood...get out and meet some old folks and start one up!

Reply:I have worked part time in the produce department of a grocery store doing the floral stuff. I did not have any experience, but i learned a lot. Mainly, I was a grocery bagger but when I had time, I helped with floral.

When I lived in Germany, I worked at a real florist. I made bouquets, corsages and boutonnières. To get that job, I had to demonstrate my arrangement abilities, since i had very little experience. Typically in Germany, you have to go to school just to work in a florist shop.

If that is what you want to do for a job, you may want to look into an apprenticeship.

As for living in an apartment and wanting to garden, you can garden indoors in pots. You can grow plants, flowers, and herbs. You can even grow dwarf citrus trees in pots indoors.

What would be the better investment a thrift store/vintage or a party decoration shop/florists?

That depends on where you live and what there is more demand for in the city you plan on opening this store.

How does one catch a frog?

About 10 minutes ago some coworkers discovered a frog about two inches big in a florist shop. Since everyone here is a little chicken I tried to catch it in a plastic liner from one of the plants on display. The frog is a sneaky little thing and evaded this trap and mad a mad dash for cover underneath a shelf stocked with many heavy vases.

Now I wouldn't be so concerned since I would love to see a customer scared out of their wits when they see our phantom frog one day but I was informed one of the workers at the florist saw this frog two days ago. I don't know how in the world a frog would survive this way but I would rather get it to a place we can keep an eye on it. After I do that I can decide what to do about it.

But first thing's first: How does one catch a frog?

How does one catch a frog?
Leave a bowl of water with a stone sitting in it. The stone needs to be slightly sticking out of the water. Frogs like to be near water with the possibilty of sitting slightly out of it. You could leave it near where you think the frog is, then when it appears, throw a net over it. Good luck!
Reply:Catch it in a jam jar then take it to a river or stream far far away from your shop.
Reply:Have someone shine a bright flashlight directly at it's eyes so it'll be confused. It will stay still.

You sneak behind it and trap a jar over it.

Method 2:

Shoot it to death with a rubber band!
Reply:Take one baboo cane put a loop of wire or better still use a wire coat hanger, make the loop out of the part you use to hang your cloths on, cover with a nylon stocking and tie off, straighten the handell and push into the bamboo cane.

With this you can then fish about under the stock shelf's.
Reply:Frogs are pretty easy to catch. This one most probably is a prince. If you a princess and you kissed him, his true form will emerge. You never know.
Reply:Difficult now that land mines have been banned. A grenade inside a kermit doll is worth a try, or an RPG might work. However, this is not really catching it in one piece, so you could try covering the floor with glue
Reply:Everyone is a little chicken, you say? Hm. You've

got a problem on your... claws, all right.

I can't say I've ever seen a chicken catch a frog --

but, I've heard that chickens can be trained to do

some very clever tricks!

It's a good thing everyone in your office is not an

old dog. You can't teach an old dogs new tricks,

you know.

Well, good luck.
Reply:you have to jump to it before the frog hops it.lol
Reply:Unless you live in a bog, you cannot keep a frog. They don't live too long even where they are supposed to be.
Reply:Grab a hold of it.
Reply:Those kind of little frogs usually have pretty long legs, which means they can jump far, fast! With bigger, heavier ones I'd just sneak up behind them and as someone said, grab gently but firmly around the body and legs. (Hold it away from you as sometimes they pee on you in fright!)

But with a littler one, once yu get it somewhere you can see it, use a tea-towel/thin piece of cloth, fling it over it and then lift it up in the towel and take it outside.

If you can't see it you need to gradually move stuff until you can! Create an opening for it to move to and chivvy it from behind. Then when it is out - fling the cloth!

Good luck!
Reply:that flashlight idea is really funny! It's not an opossum or a deer! Why dont you make a little feature of it? Let it stay in the shop. Build a little pond for it and it can live there and enjoy the environment with you. Customers will begin to like it! Maybe in the future the shop name will change to 'kissed by a frog flowers' and become really famous.. you will be rich.
Reply:Uhh. if your not afraid to use your hands use your hands. get behind it and cup your hands around fast but not hard and just keep doing it till you catch it. I love frogs and lizzards and catch them all the time. i got a gulfcoast toad in my backyard and kept it as a pet. I am a frog expert (well its not like my perfession or any thing but i know a lot about them and how to catch them.

How do you keep shop bought flowers alive for longer?

I received 3 beautiful bouquets of flowers on Mother's Day, and would like to know how to extend their lives. Some came with little sachets, which I have used. And I have followed the cutting instructions for the stems, too.

My young son thinks our living-room is a florist's. : )

How do you keep shop bought flowers alive for longer?
Put them in lemonade instead of water... sounds weird but it does work. My gran used to do it and so does my mum.
Reply:pop a copper penny in the vase - if they are tulips or gerberas pin prick the head of the stem to allow thetrapped air to escape... trim the stems at an angle at the point of the knobbly bits,
Reply:try putting an aspirin in with the water x
Reply:Put sugar in the water
Reply:Ive always used a spoonfull of suger and my flowers have always been ok.
Reply:Place the flowers in half water/half 7-Up.Refresh every 2nd day.
Reply:Ive used sugar or corn syrup to keep them alive longer.
Reply:My mu often puts lemonade in with the water a little water and most lemonade. it really works! my dad does it too!
Reply:put sugar in the water.
Reply:I once heard that putting them in lemonade will keep them fresh for longer
Reply:Two things I've tried that work. Drop a copper coin in the bottom of the vase [penny] . Add single aspirin tablet to the water
Reply:Apparently if you put them in flat lemonade they should last longer , don't know if it works but thats what someone once told me
Reply:put a little (and i do mean only a drop) bleach in the water as this kills the bacteria that speed up the wilting, but not the flowers. Also cut the bottom of the stems diagonally so they can suck up more liquid.
Reply:Trim again, then put an aspirin in the water. I know this is for roses.

Any Florists out there with advice?

I graduated from university this past august, and am already tired of corporate america. I've thought for a while that I would enjoy working in a flower shop, but am not sure how to pursue a job with a florist. By that I mean learning to be one myself, not just ringing up the flowers. My qualifications don't line up at all, yet... (I had a roommate whose mother worked in a florist's shop so I'm not ENTIRELY naive about the demands of wedding season and its brides, or the finger toughness necessary to wire countless roses) -- any tips/suggestions on how to approach so drastic a career change?

Any Florists out there with advice?
Before you go to any flower shop for a job, ask your self a few questions. Are you good under stress, Can you work very long hours for no pay, are you willing to work every holiday and what do you really expect from your training, if you don't know what to expect, then what are you goals and dreams for 5 years down the road.

The Flower business is one of the hardest businesses to be in. Orders come in last minute and everything has to be made last minute. Your dealing with a perishable product and the shop that you work for will probably be turning over it’s complete stock every two to 3 days. You will work late on Friday nights to prep/finish for Saturday wedding, you will work late on Saturday to prep/finish Sundays wedding. On a normal Friday, you will work 9am to 9pm and Saturday 8am to 7pm. If there are wedding(s) during a florist holiday, i.e. Mother’s day or Valentine’s Day you will work until 1am, Owners will work even later. You will be on your feet all day, In busy shops there are no chairs, chairs cut down on the amount of work you can do and how fast you can do it. Time is Money.

You will work Mother’s day, Thanksgiving Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and some florist work Christmas Day. Don’t ask off any days during those weeks because they will just fire you and hire the next person that will work.

A normal workweek for employee is 40 hours, but at times of the year 50-60 hours happen. Owner will work 60-70 hours. No Benefits.

Sorry I do not want to scare you, it’s just the way it is.

Before you go for your first florist job, you will want to go to a high volume shop that the owners are florist and that are there on a day to day basis. This is how you will get the best training. Most better flower shops are Family owned, the family will train you and treat you like family, especially after you become good, but then they will expect you to show up or stay when someone calls out, just like family. I would stay away from very large florist or florist with absentee owner, they have managers that will not train you well.

I prefer the applicants that apply to my shop to look presentable, but not so dressed that I feel that you do not want to get dirty, you will get dirty. No long nails, you cannot tie balloons with long nails. Be honest, tell them you want to be a florist and that your willing to work when needed but you need training. Don’t bring a Resume, There is no other job like a florist, so you are just wasting my time to read it, and it maybe held against you if you have had many jobs. Florists are looking for Reliability, That you show up all the time, on time and that you are going to work for them forever. Training if you went to school to be a florist is about $2000. I feel it takes 3 years of working in a florist before your any good. Some florist will train you in exchange for not paying you. I always felt this is the wrong message. Do not work without being paid, you should be paid something even if it is only $7-8 per hour.

Is there any upside of being a florist? Yes, People share with you the special moment of their life; Births, Birthdays, anniversaries and the pain of losses. Regular customers will ask for and about you by name. You will become part of a larger family in a sense. Everyday it’s different and for the most part happy.

What if people really could change their coloring?

I mean, snap, what if people could instantly change their pigment levels? Would that change the opinions we have about it? There is biologically only one race of homosapiens, so rasism is a misnomer. Our preoccupation with coloring as humans is like someone walking into a florists shop and refusing to buy any roses with red petals, or yellow petals, or whatever because it can't be the same kind of rose.

No kidding?! You mean there's a variety of roses to chose from? Imagine that.

What if people really could change their coloring?
Yes I would. I'd like to be slightly darker skinned...I just think it looks healthier and suits me better.
Reply:I think that would not make too much of a difference since race is not a matter of skin color, but also has ethnic, cultural and genetic associations. For example, there is absolutely no way an albino black person would be mistaken for a white person.

In fact, an ability such as you describe it would be exacerbating racism and intolerance rather than curbing it, since it is higlighting physical differences by making them more prominent in the public eye. Your initial intnention of making color seem trivial by making it readily adaptable might get lost in the real world. Even if it worked at a level, people would start focusing on other differences to judge others.

Plus I could see people feeling pressured to change their color like chamelions to socialize with different groups. Well, I think people sometimes need to realize that those groups are not that different after all. They are all part of some larger puzzle.

Unless this ability is used to self-tan instead of going to a tanning salon - then, that's a different story.
Reply:Then you would have people hating other people based on what their noses looked like, or what shape their left ear was. And if all our noses and ears looked the same, they would hate other people based on what kind of shadow puppets they like to make on the wall.

People like hating. It's in their nature to want to (since it kept our ancestors safe from marauding tribes). But we have to rise above it if we want to be called civilized.

Reply:A good way to find a florist that delivers is to go to a online florist directory. Also a hot new trend for 2007 is ordering flowers online for same day delivery.
