How do you keep shop bought flowers alive for longer?

I received 3 beautiful bouquets of flowers on Mother's Day, and would like to know how to extend their lives. Some came with little sachets, which I have used. And I have followed the cutting instructions for the stems, too.

My young son thinks our living-room is a florist's. : )

How do you keep shop bought flowers alive for longer?
Put them in lemonade instead of water... sounds weird but it does work. My gran used to do it and so does my mum.
Reply:pop a copper penny in the vase - if they are tulips or gerberas pin prick the head of the stem to allow thetrapped air to escape... trim the stems at an angle at the point of the knobbly bits,
Reply:try putting an aspirin in with the water x
Reply:Put sugar in the water
Reply:Ive always used a spoonfull of suger and my flowers have always been ok.
Reply:Place the flowers in half water/half 7-Up.Refresh every 2nd day.
Reply:Ive used sugar or corn syrup to keep them alive longer.
Reply:My mu often puts lemonade in with the water a little water and most lemonade. it really works! my dad does it too!
Reply:put sugar in the water.
Reply:I once heard that putting them in lemonade will keep them fresh for longer
Reply:Two things I've tried that work. Drop a copper coin in the bottom of the vase [penny] . Add single aspirin tablet to the water
Reply:Apparently if you put them in flat lemonade they should last longer , don't know if it works but thats what someone once told me
Reply:put a little (and i do mean only a drop) bleach in the water as this kills the bacteria that speed up the wilting, but not the flowers. Also cut the bottom of the stems diagonally so they can suck up more liquid.
Reply:Trim again, then put an aspirin in the water. I know this is for roses.
