How hard is it to have a little in town florist shop. Not to sell anything big but just to sell some flowers?

I want to sell flowers, herbs and Veggies. How hard would that be. I'm not that old though

I don't know about where you live, but here, most people doing impulse purchases of fresh cut flowers buy them at grocery stores or Wal-Mart--it's just more convenient. I doubt you could compete with the convenience and the low prices to get into that market.

Florists typically have to have some sort of connection to other markets, by belonging to a national chain such as FTD 1-800 flowers, etc. so that they get phone orders for bouquets from out of town. They may also benefit from being located close to a funeral home and getting funeral business, or from getting a word of mouth reputation for doing good event flowers (such as weddings) and getting contracts for these regularly.

Why not get a job in an existing flower shop in your area to learn the tricks of the trade and get a better idea whether or not it is something you could do. You might just luck into an opportunity to buy out an existing shop with a client base and a good reputation.

If you are wanting to do herbs and veggies, too, you might also consider having a booth at a local farmer's market or coop.
Reply:I don't think you are serious, so here's the bottom line.

1) Many mom%26amp;pop flower shops are failing now, meaning they are not profitable enough.

2) Income of a small flower shop is typically only about 10% of the revenue. So if you need 30K a year to survive, your shop must have a yearly revenue of about 300K. Anything less than that would not be survivable.

FTD, Teleflora, 1-800 (Bloomnet) are called wire-services. Most florists are members of at least one of those. Wire-services are NOT as profitable as local sales, because of the various reasons that I don't think I need to explain at this point. Most successful flower shops draw %26gt;90% of their revenues from local clients.
