My boss is going to sell flowers to a hospital gift shop at a discount. He needs to come up with a contract for the hospital. My concern is that he is not charging them enough for the flower arrangements. Does anyone have any idea what should be charged to the hospital?? A percentage most likely. He wants to charge them 50%. But I do not feel this is near enough. It would be a losing proposition. I am worried about this. Thanks all of you. Jan
Florist contract with hospital?
Think of the 'price' your boss wants to charge the hospital gift shop this way ... the 'gift shop' is a CHARITABLE shop, and the 'profits' they make usually go to help the 'indigent' patients get their health care free. Second, most people who buy flowers at the gift shop have someone in that hospital who got sick suddenly, and they are 'afraid' to leave, even just to 'buy flowers' ... but they LOVE their patient, and they may not have 'a lot of money' but really do appreciate it when the flowers aren't priced so high they can't afford them.
I think that even if he must take a 'small loss' on those flowers, that he is doing a 'good and charitable' act, and can actually take the 'money he loses' off his taxes ... which can 'pay him' much MORE than if he was able to 'clear a small profit.' In other words ... IT'S FINE ...
I hope you tell your boss about your 'doubts' and also about what I've told you here ... I may be 'wrong' about the 'why' your boss wants only 50% of his 'normal charge' ... but at least you now have 'more information' on what a 'hospital gift shop' does, and why it's a 'good thing' for the flowers to 'cost less.'
Reply:Should be close to 100% of what you charge your normal customers. Have the contract drawn up by a paralegal or attorney. 50% is really low.
Reply:I once sold floral arrangements to a gift shop. I figured my cost to make the arrangements, the x3 markup (standard floral markup), discounted 10%, and that is the price I charged to the gift shop. The gift shop, in turn, marked them up again, and that is what the customer ultimately paid. After the gift shop paid me, I didn't care if they sold the arrangement for $1.00 or $100.00. Whatever profit they could make was fine.
So, there you go, folks. If you are sending flowers to the hospital, call the florist and order direct, and avoid gift shop prices...lol.

Starting a business?
I was thinking about starting a small business (florist shop) in a downtown area, I'm going to have to take out a small business loan, how much should I take out, enough to get started and keep it running for a year..or more than that? How do I get started after I find a building to lease?

Do a business plan. In doing so, you will answer all of the questions you've asked and some you haven't yet. You'll need to know about marketing, about the competition, state and local taxes, zoning, shipping, vendors and a host of other things that can't be answered in this forum. A business plan will also show you how realistic your idea is and how to make necessary adjustments to make it work (i.e. opening a shop in downtown vs the burbs). Most of the research can be done for little or no money and there are tons of resources out there to help you. Start with visiting your state and city government websites for business start ups. Then visit your local chamber of commerce--most have free business counseling and can help you draft your business plan and make financial projections. You'll also benefit from talking to some florist (maybe in a city close by so they won't see you as a competitor) and look up trade association. Good luck

I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.
The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of getting your florist shop started and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.

I had a dream just now.
I was in a shopping mall. I watched a foreign movie (Japanese or Korean) alone in cinema. I know that there were people around me but the cinema was very quiet and only image projected into the movie screen. After the movie, I went out and I was alone in the shopping mall. Most of the shops were still open and I was the only visitor. I walked around the shopping mall, it was very quiet. I saw water lilies in a florist shop and stop there and looking around but I didn't buy any... after that, I would like to go into another shop but an old lady sleeping in front of the shop... I didn't go in.....
Does this dream have any meaning? I remember quite vividly... unlike most of my dreams, wake up and forgotten.

Need to make a vow renewal bouquet on vacation?!?
I am getting my vows renewed and have decided I am carrying a beautiful perfectly suitable small hand tied bouquet. I need instructions on how to make one, how to pick flowers for one and how on earth do I get flowers when I am on vacation! I checked most of the stores and cannot count on them having good flowers or any flowers, as they said they have them "from time to time". Florist's flowers will be too expensive, I don't like silk, my husband doesn't either (he wants it to be special and meaningful and silk to him doesn't seem appropriate) and I don't want to spend my vacation time doing things like shopping all across town for a bouquet.
I checked the places that send you flowers and they are really expensive too! But in the long run, if I could afford it, I would totally go that route. I would most appreciate answers from people who have actually made their own bouquets instead of links online, but will take those, cause I can't find any!?

I don't recommend you picking flowers, unless you have a green thumb. The way to go would be to buy string or bands from a local crafts store, such as Michael's, and go to a local supermarket in your area that sells flowers in bouquet or inexpensive vase arrangements form; and select whatever flowers you wish. Then go home and use the bands or string to tie the flower stems together after you have cut the stems so that they are no more than 8 inches in length and appropriate for a bouquet. Be sure to cut the stems in a diagonal; and until the time of the ceremony, keep the arrangement in the refrigerator, if you wish they can be kept in a bowl of water filled to no more than half an inch in depth with water while kept in the fridge. Wrap with and tie pink ribbon to the bottom of the arrangement; and cover the sharp part of the stems with cellophane or saran wrap which you should adhere with two-sided clear tape. CONGRATS.

I lucked out that one of my guests, (very good Friend), worked in a flower shop and she made my bouquets. I had all white roses with some yellow roses thrown in for spice. My girls had light blue hydrangeas with yellow roses pulled through the top. send me an email at salesadmin@optimumpower.com and I will send you pictures of the bouquets. They were very easy to make and took no time. Bonus, to save time on your vaca take some ribbon - two different sizes and some floral tape and a pair of scissors. That will help to start with.
